Hydrocolloid is a wound-dressing material borrowed by cosmetics: it swells as it draws fluid out of a raised blemish and turns opaque white when it has taken some up. The honest part of the mechanism is mechanical — the patch is a physical cover that keeps your fingers off the spot and stops makeup and dirt landing on it.

How to use. After cleansing, dry the area completely — hydrocolloid will not stick to damp skin. Press one patch over the spot and leave it 8 to 12 hours, usually overnight. Peel off and discard; use a fresh one if needed.
